## Biography

In early 2020, Ben Albert was furloughed. He sat in the silence that follows loss — not just of a job, but of the identity that was built around it. The sales career, the routine, the self-concept tied to a title. Gone. He stared at an empty bottle of Jim Beam and could have poured another drink. Instead, he opened his laptop and sent a message to a stranger on LinkedIn. He had no plan. He was just reaching into the dark, hoping someone would answer.

Someone did. That conversation became a business. Within a year, Ben had replaced his entire sales income — not by waiting for the economy to recover or the right opportunity to appear, but by doing what he did that first night, over and over: reaching out, one conversation at a time.

Based in Rochester, New York, Ben Albert is the founder of Balbert Marketing LLC, the founder and host of the Real Business Connections Network, and the creator of what may be the most earnest mission statement in podcasting: to actually move the needle on one million lives, one conversation at a time. That is not a tagline. It is the operating principle behind every episode, every guest, every message he sends. Real Business Connections launched in November 2020 — the same year he was furloughed — and has grown to 500+ episodes, a ranking in the top 1% of podcasts globally, and a reputation for conversations that feel, as one reviewer put it, like 'the kind you don't just listen to — you learn from.'

Ben hosts five programs on the Real Business Connections Network, covering social selling, content marketing, networking, LinkedIn strategy, personal development, and the habits and mindsets behind sustainable business growth. His guest roster has included world-famous marketers, entrepreneurs, behavior scientists, wellness experts, and near-death experience survivors. He sat with James Altucher. He sat with Chris Voss. He has extracted wisdom from each conversation with the precision of someone who understood, from that first night, that listening — really listening — is what converts a stranger into a collaborator.

Ben's philosophy, which he calls the combination lock theory, is the animating idea behind everything he builds: there is no universal key to success. What works for someone else won't necessarily work for you, because you are not that person. The specific combination of your skills, your relationships, your path, and your principles is what creates your particular unlocking. The job is to figure out your combination — and then work it.

He is also the co-founder of Growgetters ONLY and the founder and host of the Rochester Groovecast, a podcast that has promoted local music and events in the Rochester, NY area since 2016. He appeared on the Center Stage segment of Mornings in the Lab to share his comeback story and to make the case that the most consequential thing most people are not doing is simply sending that first message.

You ever lose a title, a routine, a sense of purpose, and realize you don't know who you are without it? The worst part isn't the loss. It's the silence after. Just you sitting with the question of whether you still matter. Most people numb that moment, pour a drink, scroll the phone, wait for someone to hand them a reason to get up. Ben Albert was in that exact silence, furloughed, depressed, staring at an empty bottle of Jim Beam. He could have poured another drink. Instead, he opened his laptop and sent a message to a stranger on LinkedIn. He had no plan, just one hesitant message into the dark. He didn't know if anyone would answer. Someone did. That conversation became a business. Within a year, he'd replaced his entire sales income. He kept reaching out, conversation after conversation. He built a podcast and sat across from people like Christie and James Alter. Real Business Connections is now ranked in the top 1% globally. Every episode starts the same way his comeback did, one conversation. That pattern shaped a philosophy. Ben calls it the combination lock theory. There's no universal key to success. Your skills, your people, your path — only the combination that fits your life. If you've ever wondered whether one conversation could be the start of a completely different life, that's today's conversation. Ben, welcome to the big show.
